Food Play Policy

Policy Statement

At Little Wonderland Nursery we recognise that sensory experiences are a vital part of early learning and

development. Food based play can support children’s exploration, creativity, language development, fine

motor skills and understanding of the world.

Whilst we recognise that using food in play can be exciting for some children, we maintain sensitive to issues

relating to parental beliefs and children’s medical needs. We will consult with families as needed, offering

alternative materials where appropriate and ensure that no child is excluded from activities due to beliefs or

dietary restrictions. In some cases, it is not appropriate to use food for play, particularly in times of austerity.

We are committed to using food in play thoughtfully, safely and responsibly, ensuring that the use of food in

play enhances learning while respecting the well being of all children and families.

The definition of food play may and is not limited to include dough, corn flour, pasta, rice, food

colourings/flavourings.

Guiding Principles

When using food in play we will:

Always prioritise children’s safety and well-being

Use food sensitively and purposefully, ensuring that it is part of planned learning experiences.

Ensure hygienic handling and storage of food play items separate to food that is to be used for

consumption.

Be mindful of food waste, encouraging minimal use and sustainability where possible.

Respect individual dietary requirements and family beliefs.

Allergies and Dietary needs

Food for play is risk assessed against the 14 allergens referred and is included in the written risk

assessment undertaken for children with specific allergies.

Staff will not use any food item that poses a risk to a child with a known allergy.

Hygiene and Safety

Staff are constantly alert to the potential hazards of food play, in particular choking hazards and signs of

previously undetected allergies. Staff will ensure:

o Hands are washed before and after handling food used for play

o Surfaces and equipment are clean and sanitised

o Food used in play is not consumed, unless it is part of a planned activity that meets food hygiene

standards

o Choking hazards are risk assessed and avoided.

The following procedures will also be adhered to:

Pulses are not recommended as they can be poisonous or may cause choking.

The use of raw vegetables for printing is discouraged.

Dried food that is used for play should be kept away from food used for cooking.

Foods that are cooked and used for play, such as dough is replaced daily.

Cornflour is always mixed with water before given for play.

Cornflower and cooked pasta are discarded after an activity; to prevent bacteria forming.

Utensils used for play food are washed thoroughly after use.
